Pocket Guide for Moving Across State Lines
There are many unknowns when it’s time to move from one state to another. But, with a bit of research, you can be fully prepared. Today’s blog aims to touch on a few of the finer points of the moving process when you’re moving away from your hometown.
Cyndi Lesinski & Associates is proud to share these free resources with our current and future clients.
For Business Owners
Many people choose to move to start or relocate their business for better opportunities. If this is you, make sure that you:
- Write a business plan. If you’re just starting out, a business plan can help you map out your steps toward success. In addition to helping you decide where and how you will sell, your business plan should also include information on your business structure and financial projections. When you are moving an existing business, now’s a great time to revamp your old business plan to reflect your new goals.
- Research the market. No matter how long you’ve been in business, the market is different from one location to the next. Make sure that you know what you’re up against, which is especially important if your main competitors are local businesses, and you will have to build your brand from scratch against trusted names. Use social media to scout out the competition early on.
- Look at commercial rental rates. Unless you plan to work from home, make sure that you know how much you can expect to spend on overhead before you move. Commercial spaces are approximately $42.41 per square foot in LA at the moment.
For Home Buyers
Buying a home in a new state can be intimidating. But, these quick tips can help.
- Get pre-approved. Although the median home price in the LA area remains higher than the national average, make sure that you know how much homes cost, and get preapproved before you move. This makes you a more serious buyer, which is crucial in a market that’s been trending upward sharply since 2000 (home values in LA have risen 280 percent).
- Invest in insurance. Because prices continue to rise, you want to invest in both home insurance and a home warranty. Home insurance covers major issues, such as theft, structural damage, or personal injuries. Your home warranty covers much more, including your electrical, heating, cooling, and plumbing systems. Before you pick a home warranty provider, see what their home warranty reviews have to say about their coverage and terms, especially if you plan to add appliance repair to your policy and you’re on a tight budget.
- Look at the school district. No matter where you choose to move, look at the local school district. Remember, the quality of education matters, and you don’t want your children in a school system where they won’t thrive. GreatSchools.org is an excellent reference.
- Schedule contractors. With the housing market so hot, make sure that you give your contractors plenty of time if you’re buying a home and need to make modifications.
For Moving Day (and Beyond)
Plenty of planning goes into any move, and when you’re moving to a new state it becomes even more important.
- Staying on top of your medical treatment. Sourcing a new doctor in your new location can be a daunting proposition, especially when time is so cramped with the move. Fortunately, you can access reliable medical care virtually thanks to telehealth. With the convenience of finding a doctor online, you’ll have a wider variety of choices for care and treatment, more flexibility, and an easier time getting prescriptions filled. What’s more, online doctor visits are typically more affordable than in-person appointments.
- Use a checklist. With so many balls in the air for before, during and after the move, it’s a good idea to have a moving checklist in hand. MYMOVE notes that your checklist should include items like securing a moving company, what you should do at your old home, having enough boxes on hand, and cleaning at the new residence before unpacking.
- Invest in insurance. If you’ll be moving but have items you aren’t ready to get rid of, you can put them in storage until you decide what to do. Some storage centers offer discounts to new customers, so be sure to ask about offers when contacting them. When you look for storage in the Los Angeles area, you’ll find nearly 130 facilities, meaning that you’ll surely get temporary storage near your neighborhood.
A few final pieces of advice are to get to know the cost of living in your new hometown before you move. This way, you can negotiate your salary if you’re moving for a job. Travelocity points out that you can also plan to spend at least a long weekend so that you can experience the city and state before you move.
Moving is never easy, and moving across state lines is not for the faint of heart. But, with a bit of preparation, you can make your relocation quick and painless. Whether you’re moving for personal or professional reasons, the above tips can help you hop the hurdles along the way.
