Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) focuses on changing beliefs and behaviors. DBT incorporates CBT and adapts it using 3 Principles:
1. A whole – systems approach is needed to identify and manage change. Everything is interconnected.
2. Change is a continuous process
3. Opposite views can be synthesized to form a different perspective. (It is not black and white)
4. In DBT, the client and therapist are continuously working to resolve the seeming contradiction between self-acceptance and change,
Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) contains those four main components that enhance its effectiveness as a therapy for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs).
I believe there is an addictive property to all BFRBs. Therefore, acceptance of ourselves as we are and things as they are is the first step towards change.
Mindfulness – awareness without judgement.

Proper Support Means Satisfied Clients
Dr Mary Travis encourages clients of any age to build on personal strengths to reach goals. One of her most effective Positive Psychological tools is the ability to bring hope to any situation. HOPE exists in each of us – just at different levels.
- A low-hope person, has dreams and goals. However, for those low in hope, dreams and goals cause anxiety and self-doubt. They look ahead and see potholes, detours, and dead ends. Often just the consideration of obstacles and failure is enough to make them decide not to try and quit before they begin. Better to stay put than to try something you fear is out of reach.
Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors
Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) involve self-grooming gone awry. Trichotillomania (compulsive hair-pulling) and excoriation are the most common. Most people engage in these behaviors to a degree. If the anxiety accompanying the behaviors begins to feel out of control or the behavior causes physical damage and begins to significantly impact one's life, psychology, counseling, and treatment are available here.
Depression and Anxiety
Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions we experience at points in our lives. Body-focused repetitive behaviors exacerbate unease and sadness. Psychology, counseling, and treatment will help you recover motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.
